In 1878, Maurice Sébastien “Bastien” Agniolen, from the Huron-Wendat Nation, opened Maurice Bastien, the first large-scale manufacturer of snowshoes, toboggans and moccasins. More than 80% of families in the community worked there. His sons then founded Bastien Brothers in 1920. The family business continued to prosper and, in 1972, Maurice Bastien’s grandson launched Bastien Industries. Their products are now known internationally. Black-and-white photograph of Maurice Bastien Jr., known as Quézo Saenhes (meaning “the big tree”). He co-founded Bastien Brothers with his brother Cyrille. Born in Jeune-Lorette on August 17, 1855, he became Grand Chief of the Huron-Wendat Nation in 1909, a position he held until 1916. He died in Village-Huron on April 17, 1932.
