The Olympic dream: Québec City’s bid to host the 2002 Olympic Winter Games

In the early 1990s, Québec City expressed its interest in hosting the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. This bid was backed by the governments of Quebec and Canada. An organizing committee, called Québec 2002, was set up. In December 1992, Québec City’s bid was accepted for Canada, over Calgary. It went on to reach the final stage of the International Olympic Committee’s selection process. But their final choice in June 1995 was Salt Lake City, in the U.S., instead. Québec City received just 7 of the 89 votes cast, finishing in last place.
