The Quebec Nordiques were a professional hockey team in the World Hockey Association (WHA). This league was created in 1972 to compete with the National Hockey League (NHL). The team’s greatest success was the Avco Cup championship win over the Winnipeg Jets in May 1977 at the Colisée de Québec. In 1979, when the WHA was dissolved, the Nordiques and three other teams joined the NHL. In its early days, the Nordiques was known as the professional team with the most French-speaking players.
