A beautiful day for cross-country skiing in front of Manoir Cap-Rouge, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River! The presence of women shows how access to winter sports was becoming democratized during the 20th century. Close to nature, the Cap-Rouge site was ideal for outdoor sporting activities.

Winter sports in Cap-Rouge from 1930 to 1950

This album features mid-20th-century winter sports photographs from the Société historique du Cap-Rouge. Sports in the Québec City area were mainly the preserve of the English-speaking elite and were practiced in closed clubs. Over the course of the 20th century, as urbanization progressed, access to sport slowly opened up, and French-speakers began to participate more. Close to nature, the Cap-Rouge area was ideal for many winter activities.
