A show commemorating Québec City’s 400th year such as Rencontres would not be complete without the legendary Gilles Vigneault. A veritable jewel in the crown of Quebec culture since 1959, the singer-songwriter is also a poet, storyteller, ardent sovereignist and defender of the French language. Many Quebecers consider his song “Gens du Pays” to be the national anthem of Quebec.

The 400th anniversary of the founding of Québec City in 2008

In 2008, Québec City celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding with activities on the theme of “encounters.” The festivities kicked off on December 31, 2007, with a show at place d'Youville. Elles se poursuivent tout au long de l’année. Wildly successful, the 400th celebrations attracted around three million visitors to Québec City. A host of shows delighted audiences, particularly the Image Mill an innovative production by director Robert Lepage. The theme also gave pride of place to encounters with Indigenous Peoples, with the Huron-Wendat community named host nation of the 400th celebrations.
